Porch Light
If just a little rain should fall upon us now
If some rain should fall
We’ll get wet, but we won’t crumble… no no no
It’s just a little rain after all
It’s just a little rain after all
Burn that porch light – keep it shining
Help me find my way back home
You’re my shelter when the winter storms descend
I have wandered in the darkness on my own too many times
Burn that porch light… once again
Burn that light for me my friend
You know my pride can keep my eyes from seeing
If some pride should make me blind
Baby be the one to love me enough to set me right (that’s right)
Before that pride leads to a fall
Before my pride leads to my fall
Burn that porch light – keep it shining’
Help me find my way back home
You’re my shelter when the winter storms descend
I have wandered in the darkness on my own too many times
Burn that porch light… once again
Burn that porch light – keep it shining’
Help me find my way back home now darling’
You’re my shelter – you’re my truest friend
I have wandered in the darkness on my own too many times
Burn that porch light… once again
Burn that light for me my friend
Burn that porch light… once again
Burn that light for me my truest friend …my truest friend

Josephine

Josephine
Josephine, carry on best as you can
Josephine, the mountain just swallowed your man
Was it just yesterday that he first felt the baby move in you?
Was it early this mornin’ he kissed you goodbye in your sleep?
Was it real or a dream, when they called you to say,
“His crew’s trapped inside, could take hours maybe days, Josephine”
Josephine, carry on best as you can
Josephine, the mountain just swallowed your man
The supper you fixed him just sits there ice cold on the table
Your ma and your sister both pray through their tears in the dark
Will he get out alive, will the earth have its fill?
The next time the phone rings – then, time will stand still, Josephine
Josephine, carry on best as you can
Josephine, the mountain just swallowed your man
Josephine, this ain’t at all what you planned
Josephine, what will you do without him?

Folks (Don’t Drop By to Visit No More)
Used to be there’d be a knock on my door
There you would stand and
say, “Hey, whacha ya doin’?”
I’d fix some coffee,
We’d sit on the porch
Watch children and time fly by…
Children and time fly by
Since you’ve been gone
There’s seldom a knock on my door
Since you’ve been gone
Folks don’t drop by to visit no more
I’d bend your ear for an hour or two
You’d always laugh at my marginal jokes
I always’ figured we’d have time to spend
But time is no longer my friend…
No longer my friend
I think your favorite time of day
Was the spur of the moment
Now my favorite times were the one’s
When I’d drop what I was doing’
When you came along…
You came along

Without You

Without You
I face the clock on the wall
It don’t say nothing at all
But it’s louder than atom bombs tonight
Like that train rollin’ by
High and lonesome it cries
I can’t sleep in this house alone…
Without you, without you
Must be that same mockingbird
Outside our window I heard
He sings his heart out to win her love tonight
It’s not so easy to do
To say I’m sorry to you
But talk is cheap and I’m flat broke now
Without you, without you…
I lie awake in our bed
Remember somethin’ you said
Then hear you sleep in the dead calm still of the night
Almost can swallow my lies
If I don’t open my eyes
Believe you’re here, but I’m foolin’ myself
Without you, without you…
I’m just no good at this
Where are your laugh and your kiss?
There’s no more tenderness
Without you, without you…

Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley
The hard life was our life and the only life that we knew
In Paradise Valley, the big evening sky cobalt blue
So many mouths left to feed and harsh country to tame
No matter how hard you work it, it fights back the same
… It fights back the same
Down from Alberta, it’s richer in Montana soil
So pick up and start over, a new homestead waits for our toil
We won’t leave our sadness behind, but neither our joy
We still have four lovely daughters and seven strong boys
…Seven strong boys
Hi dee o lay ee…
Well maybe this autumn the harvest will not be so lean
‘Cuz hope’s hard to come by to live this American dream
Lord we know you will provide everything that we need
Just wish I could pray for some extra and it not sound like
greed
… And it not sound like greed
I can find work in the coke mine
We’ll build our house on the hill
We’ll watch the morning light rise over Emigrant
Down through the valley, to the river it spills
They say in America out in the West, don’t you know
Is a place to start over, a place where a family can grow
If you can work hard and your back is as strong as your will
Opportunity’s waiting, along with the cold winter’s chill
… With the cold winter’s chill
Hi dee o lay ee…

Leaving California

Leaving California
All my friends are leaving California
They’re packin’ up the furniture, heading to Tennessee
Or maybe up North where the grass is greener
And the air is cleaner, but you seldom see the sun
All my friends are leaving California
I can’t help but feel they’re leavin’ me
Sure, there’s smog and traffic and congestion,
Crime and high priced houses, and those vain celebrities
Well maybe one day
If we can’t beat ‘em we can join ‘em
And leave you California, some day
Baby, leave the West Coast behind us
And adios the golden state
All my friends are leaving California
They’re packin’ up the minivan, heading down the interstate
Like the Grapes of Wrath, but through the rear view mirror
Outside the L.A. basin things is looking clearer, so they say
So baby take me down to Texas, they’ll love my stuff in Austin
We got people up and down the eastern coast,
Maybe Philly or straight to Boston
We got friends all over the great big south,
South Carolina down to shut your mouth!
Even Tallahassee where the gators are mean,
I’ll play in Alabama, banjo on my knee
I would miss my avocados if I lived in Colorado,
And honey we would miss the sun
If we moved to Portland, Oregon
Arizona’s just a beach without an ocean
My friends who moved to Vegas,
Where’d they get the notion
Seattle is pretty, but the sky is grey,
And I’ll probably live in Cali ‘til my dyin’ day!
Keep on driving and they never look back…

She Drove Away
03:35
|

She Drove Away
She drove away without a sound
But the work of the engine
Now she’s gone
The taillights have faded from view
I guess I should have seen this comin’
Now she’s gone
What’ll I do now Lord now
What’ll I do
What’ll I do now Lord now
What’ll I do
I stand alone in a house that’s half empty
With half of a will
To go on
Broken and beat like a blow from a hammer
A tool that can’t fix
What is wrong
What’ll I do now Lord now…
Is this what it takes
For me to recognize my need?
Is this what it takes
To get me back on my knees?
Then I say whatever it takes
Whatever it takes…

That day in September we stopped on the road
I picked up some souvenir stones
You laughed at me and said, “Babe in your head
You got enough of your own”
Now it’s rocks on the table, and rocks on my shelf
Got rocks in the bed of my truck
But I’m all outta luck
Three ninety five
It’s a long, lone - some drive
The new sun on the mountains is making me drowsy
But I don’t wanna sleep without you
You fell asleep on the passenger side
Your pretty bare feet on the dash
Willie was singing a song, I remember
I wanted that moment to last
So I held a picture of you in that moment
As bright moonlight shined in your hair
And I can still feel you there
It was here that I lost you, so here I’ll remember
And I’ll just keep driving all night
Until I make it right

Today
I see the world much different now
And it’s a world of possibility
And if it turns me upside-down
I’ve got a brand new way to look at things
Today …
A new pair of glasses on my nose
I’m seeing beauty unexpectedly
Between the lines, behind a rose
Depth and shapes and colors I had never seen (before)
Today…
I hold my fingers in a frame
To capture images of you and me
The lighting’s perfect here today
And I got my camera focused on eternity
Today…

This Time Last Year (We Were in Paris)
This time last year
We were in Paris
We walked among strangers
On the Champs-Élysées
This time last year
We sang with the minstrel
You can say I'm a dreamer
This time...
This time last year
Tired and hungry
Our best tour in a taxi
We held on for dear life
This time last year
Strike a pose with a statue
And we kissed by the Eiffel
About this time
This time last year
This time last year
Mademoiselle I did love you
At this time last year
This time last year
This time last year
But I love you more deeply… this time
This time last year
We strolled in the gardens
We posed with the statues
And we walked through the rain
This time last year
So lost in the station
Racing for the last Metro
Our last day was just insane
his time last year
This time last year
Mademoiselle I did love you
At this time last year
This time last year
This time last year
But I love you more deeply…this time
We walked down the river at night, I remember
The light in your eyes
Sparkling like jewels. Arm in arm two more fools
In the city of lights
This time last year
This time last year
Mademoiselle I did love you
At this time last year
This time last year
This time last year
But I love you more deeply…
(And even more sweetly…)
This time

What's Mine Is Yours
03:16
|

What’s Mine Is Yours
There is nothin’ that you need from me
Nothin’ that is not already yours
Yet the one thing I can bring
The only thing that’s mine
That’s my offering
I’ve held it back, locked it away
Under lock and key I’ve kept it safe
With a pocket knife I carved real straight
Initials in what’s yours
But I called it mine
Here’s the one thing I can bring to you
A broken heart, it’s not worth much it’s true
But what’s mine is yours
So here I sit and write a simple tune
Before the one who made the ocean blue
And hung the stars that sing your name
Creation declares everything
What is left to sing
Here’s the one thing I can bring to you
A broken heart, it’s not worth much it’s true
I lay it here, do with it what you will
It’s broken, bleeding, but it’s beating still
But what’s mine is yours
